Aaron Taylor asked:

Imagine a grade school student from China who goes to a public school and is asked to swear an oath to the Chinese state every day along with the rest of his or her class at school. Imagine that the young boy or girl refuses to participate due to the fact that he or she is a Christian and does not want to declare allegiance to anyone or anything other than Jesus Christ. I wonder how the average American Christian raised in a conservative evangelical church would view this scenario? I imagine that millions of Christians in America would not only admire the grade school student, but would probably use him or her as an example in Sunday School on how to take a stand as a Christian against a godless secular culture.

Now let’s imagine another scenario. Imagine a young boy or girl in America attending one of the thousands of Christian schools throughout the nation. Imagine that a young boy or girl decides one day to politely decline in saying the pledge of allegiance along with his or her classmates. I wonder how the average American evangelical Christian would view this scenario? Given the political firestorm over taking “under God” out of the pledge, I imagine that the reaction of the same millions of Christians who thought the Chinese boy or girl was a hero would be decisively different than over the Christian child refusing to participate in the American pledge of allegiance. I further imagine that many would even question if the student was a Christian at all. After all, so the thinking goes, America is a Christian nation.

Does anyone else see a problem with this? To many American Christians, a child who pledges allegiance to China is considered idolatrous, but a child who pledges allegiance to America is considered a patriot. Speaking as an American evangelical myself, I have to ask what does this say about how we as American Christians view ourselves? For many Christians, the idea that America is not a Christian nation is tantamount to blasphemy. I find it odd that the same people who would applaud a Chinese or a Russian for refusing to swear an oath to a secular state see no problem with wrapping an American flag around a cross in the front yards of their churches.

For the record, I’m not saying necessarily that it’s a damnable sin to say the Pledge of Allegiance, although I do think the issue should be looked at more carefully. Although it’s true that the Bible says, “Give custom to whom custom is due,” it’s also true that the New Testament repeatedly prohibits taking oaths. Given what the New Testament actually says about taking oaths, (namely, that a Christian isn’t supposed to be making them) isn’t it a bit odd that one of the key issues of the Christian right involves keeping the words “under God” in an oath to a nation/state?

Why does this contradiction exist? I think it’s because the average American Christian from a conservative evangelical background associates patriotism with following Jesus. To confirm this truth, we need look no further than “Christian” talk radio. I actually heard a “Christian” talk show host one time tell a U.S. Marine “Remember, when you serve in the U.S. Military, you’re serving Jesus.” As odd at this statement might sound, turning Jesus into an officer of the U.S. Marines, for many of my friends and colleagues, the statement “soldiers in Iraq are doing the will of God” seems to flow off their lips without a second thought.

Should a Christian associate America’s cause with God’s cause? I don’t think so. The truth is that America is a mixture of good and bad, just like many other nations. We can’t claim a special relationship with God more than any other nation can. Although our pilgrim forefathers believed they were making a covenant with God when they entered this land, we have no reason to believe that God entered a covenant with them. Biblically speaking, any alliance between the Kingdom of God, which always looks like Jesus taking on the form of a suffering servant, with a version of the Kingdom of this world, (however new and improved the version of the worldly kingdom is) is an unholy alliance-and for good reason. Ask a typical native American Christian whether he or she believes that God gave the continental U.S. to white Europeans for the purpose of advancing the cause of freedom and liberty and you might get a totally different answer than you would hear from one of Ohio’s Patriot Pastors.

As a missionary who has traveled the world many times over, I’ve met many Christians from other countries who have asked me why so many American Christians associate patriotism with Christianity. Not being one who likes to mix words, I tell them the truth. Americans read the Bible with cultural blinders on…..just like everyone else.

As for those who would venerate a Chinese student for refusing to pledge an oath to China but marginalize a Christian kid for refusing to pledge an oath to America, I’m not sure if they’ll like what I have to say, but for a Bible believing Christian, the response to this anomaly should be obvious. Our first and foremost loyalty should be to Jesus Christ. Although we need to honor and serve our country as good citizens, to equate love for Jesus with love for country is nothing short of idolatry.

Mike Fletcher asked:

If you go to any Christian bookshop, or the Christian section in any bookstore, you will find books written by Christians, for Christians. While there is definitely value in that, it is not necessarily reaching out to those who are agnostic or may not be Christian. The question then becomes, what does it take to reach out to non-Christians and what can help to lead them to the Lord, Jesus Christ.

We see this same problem happen with most Christian websites. They are written with a Christian reader in mind. While some non-Christians will visit from time to time, they typically either leave, or leave a rude comment behind.

Most churches are no different. They are made for Christians, not for those who are not yet believers. Something needs to be done to appeal to non-Christians without bending to the principles of Christianity.

What it boils down to is relating. As Christians we need to reach out to non-Christians in a way that they can relate to and that is not going to be threatening or perceived as being too pushy.

One of the best ways to reach out to non-Christians is to live the life of a compassionate Christian. Caring for others and helping others will help to set you apart. You can often recognize a Christian by their loving behavior and others are drawn to this behavior.

Reading or carrying your Bible can also be a good way to attract others to the good word. On many occasions simply reading your Bible at break on work or at the local coffee shop can start a discussion about Jesus and Christianity.

Another great way to spark a conversation on your faith is to wear a Christian t-shirt or Christian jewelry. Christian apparel is attractive and stylish while packing a powerful message. A cool Christian t-shirt is sure to start a conversation and can help to open the door for you to have a discussion on Christianity and what it means to you.

An important thing to remember when trying to evangelize with others is the importance of being a good listener. Remember to not get too preachy as this can close the mind of others. When having a discussion about faith with others remember to listen, be respectful, and you don’t have to apologize for what you believe in.

When someone is perceptive to what you have to say about Christianity, don’t be afraid to invite them with you to your next church service. You would be surprised at how a few kind words, being a good listener, and being a good friend can present the opportunity to bring others to the Lord.

Robin Calamaio asked:

Human beings are a complicated mix. For example, we are quite social and operate in groups … yet, we are also unique, individual units. Some activities are correctly pursued in group, but some pursuits must be solo. As Christians, we become part of the body of Christ – yet, we remain an individual. God says it this way: “You are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.” Furthermore, He distributes spiritual gifts “to each one individually just as He wills” and places “the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desire(s)” (1Cor 12:11,18 and 27). Those in this group actually have their individuality enhanced – by imparted gifts. But, … let’s move back a step.

The most important, the most crucial, indeed the most non-negotiable of all solo actions, centers on the salvation issue. This matter begins and ends with the individual and the Creator. There is no activity more solo. And it puts us in the weakest of positions because “all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do” (Heb 4:13). It’s no wonder we hide “in the trees” like Adam – looking for cover (Gen 3:8). It is ironic that the shield of choice is often … religion.

The only religion I am interested in discussing here is the Christian religion.

The Christian Religion

In my mind, the Christian religion and the Christian faith are two different things. It is not imperative that you adopt my demarcation between the two, but if you think (for this moment) in the framework I am presenting, the following discussion will make more sense. When I think of religion, I think; “ceremony, ritual, dogma – and formulas for these things.” When I think of faith, I think; “inquiry, study, knowledge – and persuasion of what is true.”

Using this definition, the Christian religion … is easy. Formulas are presented that lead one to salvation, then directives are clearly defined for “good” Christian living. Altar calls, confirmations, or baptisms are soon followed by church membership, tithing, and the church calendar.

It is a natural weakness for man to fall into religion. The reason is really quite simple. Religion tells the follower everything he/she must do. The directives are not to be questioned – just obeyed – and everything will be fine. Many people feel like they have actually accomplished something by following religious orders. This has great appeal for the participant – and often provides great comfort. But, this comfort does not end in life.

The Christian religion rests on two primary pillars. First, those in the pew are sheep who must be led. And the second pillar is (you guessed it) – the leaders. They are to be obeyed. Two huge blunders are created by this model. For starters, Christians – as sheep – is a “figure of speech” (Jn 10:6). Sheep are depicted as naive, defenseless and quite dumb (However, they only answer to the trustworthy voice of their master … and ignore a stranger’s voice [Jn 10: 1-5,16,27]. People would do well to imitate this. They often follow “strange voices” … who lead them into death). But, where does Ezekiel’s verse fit in the “dumb sheep” analogy? “‘As for you, My sheep, the sheep of My pasture, you are men, and I am your God,’ declares the Lord” (Ezek 34:31). This is consistent with Paul’s admonition to the wayward Corinthians: “in your thinking be mature … Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong” (1Cor 14:20 and 16:13). Where is it that God calls His children – to be stupid sheep?

Secondly, the leaders of the Christian religion are exempted from this “figure of speech”. They are over the dumb sheep. But, they themselves … are not dumb sheep. One of the most oft quoted passages supporting this position comes from Hebrews: “Obey your leaders and submit to them; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you” (Heb 13:17). At first glance, it does appear the religion model is accurate – sheep are supposed to obey leaders. But, a simple language lesson will demand a closer scrutiny.

This English translation (from Koine Greek) contains at least three problems.

First, in the English translation: “Obey” is a verb in the active voice. But in Koine Greek, this is a verb in the passive voice. The passive voice means the subject is acted upon – not doing the action. The actual word translated, “obey” (peitho) has several potential meanings (just as English words do). The root meaning of “peitho” is “persuasion.” Blind obedience is outside the circle.

Second, in the English translation: “leaders” is a noun. But, this is a participle in the Greek – not a noun. A participle is a verbal adjective. There is a huge difference between “the leading ones” and “leaders.” In this instance, “the leading ones” refers to the more mature Christians “of you all” (a plural genitive). They seek to persuade the less mature by instruction and example – and call for imitation. “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (1Cor 11:1 – and this is the Apostle Paul … to the Corinthians!).

Third, in the English translation: “to them” is a prepositional phrase. This is not in the Greek at all and should just be forgotten.

Hebrews 13:17 should be translated more like this: “You must allow yourselves to be persuaded by the leading ones of you all … and yield.” The less mature are commanded to allow themselves to be persuaded (passive) by the more mature among them – and then yield to accurate handling of the word of God (doctrine and lifestyle) – not to them. This is totally consistent with all the other foundational Biblical injunctions of the Christian faith. “Examine everything; adhere to that which is good” (1Thes 5:21). The Bereans “were more noble minded than those in Thessolonica … examining the Scriptures daily” to see if Paul’s assertions were correct (Acts 17:11). “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!” (2Cor 13:5).

Those who are leading must account for how they led. But, they are not responsible for wrong choices by their listeners (assuming they had led correctly). Paul was not guilty before God for the errant choices of the wayward Corinthians or the bewitched Galatians. Their choices did bring him grief … but not guilt.

I cannot explain why translators have so fouled this passage from Hebrews. If you can find a Greek scholar who can explain this – let me know (”Peithesthe” is not a middle deponent verb to be translated active either). By the way, Jesus did talk about leaders one time. “Do not be called leaders; for One is your leader – Christ” (Mt 23:10). Does He need to repeat Himself?

The Christian Faith

This arises when individual circumstances converge on a person – forcing an intense search … for the Creator. While God may use people, or even some of the structures of religion as cited above, these things are secondary (at best). The Christian faith is the search for God. “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God – for the living God” (Ps 42:1,2). Furthermore, He tells us, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jer 29:13). This is hard. In fact, I don’t think we can really know when we have truly sought Him with all of our heart. Duplicities, known and unknown, infest us.

God calls people to the Christian faith. He calls them … one by one. No one can get into heaven on the coattails of another. Adhering to the greatest of preachers … will not work. Supporting, or participating in, the most fruitful Christian church … will not move God to accept that one. Even following hard on the heels of the most devout of mothers … will not usher one into glory. There is but One Advocate before God the Father who can make a successful case for one’s inclusion into His favor (1Jn 2:1). And one must deal with Him solo. Nothing we will ever undertake is more solo – and absolutely necessary.

The extreme emergencies of life … are faced alone. The only One who can help us – is God. When Stephen was being stoned to death, he needed Christian faith – not some version of Christian religion (Acts 6 and 7). Our situation will be different, but the reality of need will be the same. The Christian faith is spiritual independence from man … and total spiritual dependence upon Jesus Christ.

Peter Menkin asked:

Question submitted on Yahoo on the internet:Most don’t read the bible, attend religious services, or pray. A higher percentage of Christians commit crimes than non-religious people and Christians are more likely to support capital punishment and wars which are all murder. Non-religious people tend to be more tolerant and accepting, promoting social welfare and peace. But then Christians procliam to have some kind of moral superiority.

Why is this so backwards?

Answer provided by the writer: With any religion, those who attend services and are active participants in good standing with their church or other place of worship find themselves at different levels of understanding and practice. I cannot speak in agreement with your rhetorical question, but as a Christian and Episcopalian will respond in kind regarding the Christian experience.

A proclaimed Christian will probably be Baptized, recite the creeds, and other prayers in Church, and do deeds of service. These similar kinds of acts are pretty standard Christian practice for the good Christian. Even the regular or average one of good standing.

Yet many Christians fail, and all Christians are in some manner or degree sinners. That is a human who is and will, has failed in the eyes of Christ in God. It is in returning to the Lord, as practice, that redemption can be found. At least this is a significant way. Interestingly, among many believers in this faith, intention is important.

Each Christian meets his fellow where he may be in his journey, hypocrite, warmonger, war starter, warrior, supporter of capital punishment, evil conservative, tyrannical socialist, or even Fascist (pretty far gone, I know), or other. I cannot agree that the higher percentage of Christians commit crimes, but you may be right.

Jails are full of Christians. One reason they seek out the faith and way of living is that it is a way of forgiveness and mercy. It is also a way of transformation and change, whether that search for such is honest or not isn’t the issue. Come and see at a Church to discover or observe this God who is generous, kind, merciful, and faithful to human beings through history. That is not an anser, per se. It is a way of saying, is this God’s fault that Christians may fail? They do.

But most important in my answer, is the fact that ministers and members of the Church meet their fellows where they may be, not as they would be perfect, or as Christians would like them to be.

I cannot speak to how many read the Bible, but in the Church of my denomination, if one attends one is going to hear the Bible read.

Interestingly, though, the Episcopalian who is a member remains in good standing and is considered in Communion if he or she attends worship services and takes Eucharist a mere three times a year. This means going, for instance, or Christmas, Easter, and other time. This seems scant attendance, I know. But it is so.

As for the non-religious being the better part of human kind, I cannot speak in answer to your assertion. There are, after all, a billion Christians in the world–if memory serves correct. Many may be failed Christians, even those who have fallen away but still consider themselves Christian. You may be speaking of these, too, in your question. Regardless, they identify with Christianity, and even if not the better part may have to be their light, as Christians and Christianity is a light to the world. So I believe.

Christians live a life and way, their Church is a moral organization, and by definition membership and participation in such is a valid source of the moral life. Christ is and was a moral force, a good, in the world both now and in the history of mankind. I think most peole would say so, even those not practicing or professed Christians.

How moral is what I’ve discussed as more, for you imply a requirement of high standard. As I say, we meet each other where one may be.

Do I think they are morally superior? Certainly, history and Western Civilization has shown that the Christian influence has been positive and uplifting, despite its human shortcomings, failures, and errors.

This is not so much an apology, but a means of putting a framework on your questions and statements regarding the moral superiority and standing of the Christian faith. This is a framework of Christian living, which follows the poor, chaste, Christ through the year.

Is Christianity not one of the world’s great religion, and as such by definition a superior one in our eyes of Western Civilization.

Kenneth Gene Dockins asked:

God’s Word Continues to Speak Via Christian Web Sites That Offer You Outstandingly Helpful and Highly Supportive Christian Ebooks.

Some Christian web sites supply you with fundamental guidance by offering downloadable ebooks. These may be such unique Christian ebooks that capture the essence of Christian lifestyle and thereby help you to benefit from the assistance provided by helpful, supportive, Christian web sites throughout the world.

When you are searching for enhancement or enlightenment on Christian lifestyle endeavors, you may find that your best Christian ebooks online, in addition to brick and mortar outlets, now tend to meet, match, and even neutralize the pace set by our modern, conquest oriented, quick-fix society.

As uniquely stated that Christianity is a time-honored tradition, the word of God continues to show forth dependably. Within the technological advances of our time, solid Christian web sites knowingly provide digital beacons in conveniently obtainable and easily readable formats.

Compact disks, USB or flash remote disk drives, plus read-write CD-ROMs or DVDs synergistically combine, to offer you vast, economical, and rare selections of online and offline Christian development reading material.

This gives you the option, for example, to now almost effortlessly download ebooks from your own personal or preferred medley of Christian ebooks.

It is possible that standard stores possess a disadvantage in that regard. Because, although brick-and-mortar stores may carry or provide a large selection of hard-cover reading materials… they compete far less favorably with the no-cost, digital delivery features of Christian web sites.

Additionally, delivering much-desired, common-grounded cordiality, plus dependability in God-centered customer service (which Christian web sites especially supply), gives Christian market shoppers the well demanded and highly expected satisfaction they are seeking in an otherwise, seemingly complacent or non-caring, sales driven society.

Whether you are a devout, seasoned Christian, or a newcomer to the fold, basic Christian lifestyle concepts and fundamentals remain standing, without alteration or change.

For example, consider the following basic principle you see, constantly expounded upon by countless Christian web sites and Christian book distributors across the globe…

That is, one of the greatest and most helpful Christian commandments you may find is, “Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself. Do This For The Love Of Me.”

These words provide a challenge, if you will. They invite you to become a much better person… to improve your own human relationship skills, but most importantly… to bind yourself in-line with cooperative spiritual giving through enhanced personal control or power.

In essence, striving to increase power over ones self… emotionally, socially, spiritually… remains a formidable challenge and an almost elusive goal for many non-Christians and Christians alike.

Now, although only ten commandments form this generally solid basis for a positive, overall Christian life, the single commandment to take control over ones self continues to provide its own, unique obstacle course for millions of people you might encounter.

And, when fervently seeking God (or, in ones quest for attainment and adherence to God-centered principles)… one can easily forget, overlook, or simply underestimate the healing power associated with self-discipline, Christian adherence, and Godly direction.

In other words, God creates human beings with a general capacity to shine. Yet, we also operate with another unique ability. Meaning, another choice we can make just as easily is one that includes a decision to falter.

And, falling short of God’s glory may often become all too familiar, especially in today’s individualistically hectic, needs-driven society.

Therefore, considering all of the above… finding one solid source for peace of mind, innocent stress release, divinely approved relaxation, and majestic calm is a service that Christian web sites also have a calling to perform.

And, it is within such light that, today, you are here reading this article. Most likely, you seek to maximize your mutual sharing, understanding, and utilization of the Godly word.

Your goal is to acquire more confidence, in the Christian way. Plus, you desire to become equipped and readied by applying your focused intention and upgraded sincerity towards being a better person.

So, here is what you find. Out of all the millions of Christian web sites at which you may have landed on this day, God sees fit to place you here, to find the one, most useful gem out of many, that Christian web sites may offer you.

Yet, where lays your primary, greatest, and most obvious or startling, year 2008 Christian challenge?

Well, a Christian majority, much like almost any other normal majority in our populous, wants to walk away from essentially every Christian encounter… with personal improvement, newfound joy, and uplifted willpower to take positive action upon the Godly principles, concepts, or fundamentals revisited in online mediums like Christian ebooks, for example.

Christianity is not a new occurrence. And, Christian guidelines on sex, marriage, lifestyle, or career sometimes deserve to be presented to you in an invitingly optimistic way.

Rare and unique Christian web sites manage to meet your expectations for such options – offering you Christian reading material specifically selected to match multi-purposed facets of your life.

As merely a polite and well intended suggestion, you can allow Christian web sites to help you find your own place in God’s plan for this world.

No doubt that since the economic reform, China has made significant progress in the fields of economics, society, citizen’s lives, environmental protection, and various others, and its influence reaches to all nations. Yet, how should a Christian view the last 30 years since the reform? To answer this question, China Ministries International and Vancouver Short-Term Mission Center co-hosted a seminar and Chinese Christians from various fields were invited to give their analysis and opinions. Dr Victor Yang: Reviewing Economic Reform 30 Years Truth-Monthly Canada West Chief- Editor Dr. Victor Yang brought up and reflected with the audiences the major events that took place in the last three decades since the reform, which include breaking the “da-guo-fan” or indiscriminate egalitarianism, establishing the responsibility system, a policy that allowed individuals to keep whatever profits they earned from work, designating areas as “experimentation zones”, establishing system of market economy, and the founding of modern corporate policies, and etc. While looking at actual figures, Yang said that according to the social-economic development reports released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) China’s annual Gross Domestic Product (GNP) is increasing at an average of 8.1%, the total economic output has increased by 77 places, which is currently ranked as third in the world. What Is Christian Counseling:-

Christian counseling is counseling performed by a professional counselor who upholds Christian values, beliefs and philosophy. Christian counseling is faith-based counseling which draws upon the science of Psychology filtered through the biblical foundations of Christian teaching. The unifying factor is the therapist, him or herself, who has integrated a combination of Christianity, psychology, and psychotherapy into an applied program. Clients may see Christian counseling as a relationship with a caring counselor directed toward increased awareness of themselves, others, the societies and cultures in which they live, and their understanding of the Christian God. It is often focused on solving the individual problems of the patient.

Nationally recognized Christian counselors services include, Day Spring Center, the Minirth Clinic and Meier Clinics also located in various location of USA like Christian counseling Dallas, Richardson,Plano. Clients may see Christian counseling as a relationship with a caring counselor directed toward increased awareness of themselves, others, the societies and cultures in which they live, and their understanding of the Christian God.

Christian Counseling – The Differences

As a general rule, both Christian counseling and secular counseling share the same desire to help people overcome their problems, find meaning and joy in life, and become healthy and well-adjusted individuals, both mentally and emotionally. Most counselors have graduate degrees and have spent years learning their craft. Christian counseling is distinct from secular counseling. Christian counseling rises to another dimension. “In contrast to psychologically-integrated systems, Biblical counseling seeks to carefully discover those areas in which a Christian may be disobedient to the principles and commands of Scripture and to help him learn how to lovingly submit to God’s will,” reports the International Association of Biblical Counselors.

When we need Christian Counseling

If you are in need of some basic Biblical advice concerning something as simple as your finances or possibly one of the broken, or a Christian couple desiring to get married, a couple already married, or if you are struggling with singleness or striving to have better relationships in your family, contact one of these Christian counseling centers. Seek out one that has been recommended to you and most importantly, Biblically based. You are an important member of the Christian body. It is important to get the help and healing needed. Someday you may in turn be able to help someone else through your testimony of recovery.

Nithin Sridhar asked:

In early 1982, Father Joseph Parekatil of the Catholic Church of Parasahi, Madhya Pradesh, destroyed the sacred murthi of the Goddess Visweshwari Siddheswari enshrined on the nearby Nawain Tekdi hill and erected a small wooden cross. Later, the father erected a 31 – foot high concrete cross illegally on the hill on February 18th, 1983. Enraged villagers destroyed the cross a month later on March 17th. On February 20th, 1985, with the intent once again of trying to gain possession of the hill, Father Parekatil put on the orange robes of a Hindu sannyasin, built a hut on the hill, sat on a tiger skin and began performing worship in the Hindu style. As a result, thousands of simple Hindus came to the hill on Fridays, unaware of the deception they were witnessing. On May 18th, a complaint was registered, but to no avail. Again there was agitation in the area, and this time, on October 1st, 1985, the villagers tore down the priest”s hut and tossed away the remaining pieces of the concrete cross. Father Parekatil only gave up when he was arrested a week later for breaking the peace and released on bail with instructions to behave [1].

This tactics used by Father Parekatil of adopting Hindu symbols, to further his missioanry goal is called as “Inculturation” or “Indigenization”. Christianity has always been following a policy of “Inculturation.” This means that it adopted Pagan elements in Christianized form in order to ease the transition from Paganism to Christianity. Pagan gods became Christian saints. Pagan Festivals became Christian festivals. In this process of inculturation, the Christian Church adapted old forms to its new message, but made sure that through the Pagan veneer the Christian doctrine was impressed upon the converts [2]. “Indigenization,” says Kaj Baago, “is evangelization. It is the planting of the gospel inside another culture, another philosophy, another religion [3]“. In Indian case, “Inculturation” or “Indigenization” means “the incorporation of Jesus in Indian spiritual tradition”. Fr. Bede says “In India we need a Christian Vedanta and a Christian Yoga that is a system of theology which makes use not only of the terms and concepts but of the whole structure of thought of the Vedanta [4].”

Shantivanam Ashram on the banks of the sacred Cauvery River at a forested place near Trichy in South India appears Hindu. It has a Hindu shrine; saffron-robed “swami” seated cross – legged on a straw mat; devotees practising yogic meditations, even chanting Hindu scriptures. But these impressions gradually prove false. First, the eye detects that the courtyard shrine is for Saint Paul and that “puja” is actually, a daily Mass, complete with incense, arati lamps, flower offerings and prasadam. Finally, one meets the “swami”, learning he is Father Bede “Dayananda” Griffiths, a Christian “sannyasin”. This is a Christian ashram, one of more than 50 in India, which are variously described as “experiments in cross-cultural communication,” “contemplative hermitages that revolve around both Christian and Hindu ideals.Fr. J. Monchanin [5], one of the founding members himself defines his mission in these terms: “I have come to India for no other purpose than to awaken in a few souls the desire (the passion) to raise up a Christian India. It will take centuries, sacrificed lives and we shall perhaps die before seeing any realizations. A Christian India, completely Indian and completely Christian will be something so wonderful the sacrifice of our lives is not too much to ask.” His words clearly show the motive behind these ashrams.

Lausanne Movement (for world evangelization) published a paper “Christian witness to Hindus [6]” (1980). In the report, under the title “Methodology Issues” lists some of the methods to be implemented to convert Hindus. Some of them are-

(1) We should enunciate theology in Indian categories so that the Hindu can understand the gospel.

(2) We must develop a truly Christian world view consistent with the Indian context.

(3) While presenting the gospel, we must be aware of the fact that the Hindu understands the doctrine of God, man, sin, and salvation in a way entirely different from the biblical doctrine.

(4) Communicate the gospel through indigenous methods such as bhajans, drama, dialogue, discourse, Indian music, festival processions, etc.

Sita Ram Goel, in his book “Catholic Ashrams [7]“, lists 108 such Christian ashram in India, 4 in Nepal and 8 in Sri Lanka. His list includes Asha Niketan, Bangalore, Karnataka, Bethany Ashram (1938), Channapatna, Karnataka, Christa Sevakee Ashram (1950), Karkala, Karnataka, Christian Institute for the study of Religion and Society, Bangalore, Karnataka, Yesu Karuna Prarthanalaya, Kote, Mysore District, Karnataka. The present Catholic ashrams have inherited a history of intrigue and subterfuge. Here is a description from the “Madhya Pradesh Report(1956) [8]“: “Robert De Nobili (A Catholic Jesuit priest) appeared in Madura in 1607 clad in the saffron robes of a Sadhu with sandal paste on his forehead and the sacred thread on his body. He gave out that he was a Brahmin from Rome. He showed documentary evidence to prove that he belonged to a clan that had migrated from ancient India. He declared that he was bringing a message which had been taught in India by Indian ascetics of yore and that he was only restoring to Hindus one of their lost sacred books, namely the 5th Veda, called Yeshurveda (Jesus Veda). It passed for a genuine work until the Protestant Missionaries exposed the fraud about the year 1840. This Brahmin Sannyasi of the “Roman Gotra”, Father De Nobili, worked for 40 years and died at the ripe age of 89 in 1656. It is said that he had converted about a lakh of persons but they all melted away after his death”.

This is the situation the Hindu finds himself in. Christian missionaries have adopted Hindu ways of life, Hindu religious symbols, architecture, worship forms and declared themselves as Swamis. A Catholic priest who calls himself “swami” instantly attains the status and authority of a holy man in Hindu society, which he can use to make converts. By using Sanskrit terminology in his sermons he implies a close relationship of Hindu theology to Catholic theology, a relationship which does not really exist. Such missionaries speak authoritatively on Hindu scriptures and argue that their [Christian] teachings are consonant with everything Hindu, but add a finishing touch, “fullness” to the traditional faith.

christian life
Michael Young asked:

We create habits to help us establish a familiar world, and then rely on them to help us establish control. We would probably list these habits as good habits. all of us have routines that are make up our character and what we do each day.

Most of our behavior is demonstrated by our habits. But, what is a habit? Organically, habits are created through non-stop, electrical impulse signals to our mind, which the sensory nerves carry from our hearing, touch, vision taste and smell to the data processing area of our brain over our lifetime. Cognitively, habits are a repeated, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through successive repetition, an established disposition of the mind or character.

It is paramount to admit that some of those habits are not good for us. We all have habits or routines that are part of our make up and what we do each day – but there comes a time when we need to accept that some of those habits are detrimental for us. Everyone has some habits in their lives that robs their day-to-day lifestyle of a little (or a lot) of prosperity.

You may see that to successfully manage habit changes, breaking bad habits require exchanging them with new appropriate ones. Natural bad habits often include: over scheduling, over spending, over eating, and even over analyzing. We often believe that we can’t overcome an area because it is a “habit,” and methodically habits are hard to break.

How do they habits get started? We train ourselves with bad habits as written in 2 Peter 2:14, we are insatiable for sin [we] train our hearts in greed.

Bad habits are inherited from parents and grandparents. 1 Peter 1:18, shows that the useless behavior patterns that were passed down from your ancestors. But, when Christ heals you from them He makes it possible to live the remainder of your life no longer following human desires, but following the will of God.

We get them from allience. Paul warns us in 1 Corinthians 15:33, Dont be misled, bad companions corrupt good habits. Further, he notes, There are some who, out of habit formed in idolatry, still eat food as if it were offered to idols, and because their conscience is weak, they are sinning. So it is obvious that even after good habits are developed being around those who are of conflicting behavior can destroy them.

What do we need to do about our patterns?

5 steps to change an unhealthy habit into a healthy one

The first step in altering a sinful pattern is to stop trying to break it and create a plan to change it. A habit implies that a learning has resulted in behavior that occurs so automatically that the one doing it does not have to plan this action or behavior. Often you do not realize what you are doing until after it is done. You must set in place a method to identify this undesirable behavior or action.

Two, the undesirable trait is like a hole in your personality. It needs to be filled with something that is good and profitable. The Holy Spirit by His Word trains in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16) so that new behaviors become habits in place of old ones. Determine what you will do in place of the habit you intend to redeem.

Three, the time when you are most likely to engage in sinful patterns are when you are stressed, hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. You can remember this with the acronym Shalt as in shalt not! Keep watch on these moments as this is when your conscience be most weak.

Four, we were created to have relationships. Having a friend you can be real and honest with is remarkably important in changing habits. Talk with that person and ask them to keep you accountable regarding your desired change. Ask them to question you about your progress in making your change when you two talk or meet.

Lastly, practice! Hebrews 5:14, reveals to us that mature Christians are those whose faculties have been trained by practice to do distinguish good from evil. Confirm a practice that exercises the good replacement. Remember — It took time to develop your bad habit, so it will take time to replace it. Is there some habit or behavior that you keep struggling with and constantly grumble about it?

I bet you are ready to change your bad habits with better ones.

christian music
Sam J Wilkinson asked:

“Christian Rock”, the genre often scoffed at by traditional rock artists, enthusiasts & critics alike is gaining popularity and stamping its place as a sort after genre for the young generation of head-banging, mosh-pitting gurus! Didn’t Christian rock die a couple of years ago, you ask? Christian rock music is growing faster than ever before with Daily News of Christian Rock Music, new artists & albums streaming across the Internet and pumping the airways continuously every day. So where did this religious music come from? I mean this is new right?

This type of rock music wasn’t around 20 years ago, was it? Well I didn’t think so until recently, the reality is Christian music or should I say Christian rock music has been around seemingly since the dawn of creation! So why seeing it today all the time? Where were the God Rocker’s for so long and what happened to the voice of damnation for those participating in anything other than a church hymn or Sunday school choir? The chastity belt of today’s Christian rock is alive and kicking. There are many religious organisations who oppose this form of music, I will talk more about this opposition later.

Most Christians are in favor of this “movement” feeling that Christian rock music is another way to reach people with the importance of the Christian faith. So why the controversy?, what is so different about Non-Christian rock music in comparison to Christian rock? Many have asked this question and instead of quoting Mr. Bob Dylan “the answer is blowing in the wind”, I thought I would analyze the facts and see why there is so much “opposition” to the sounds of “thumping grace”. After reviewing many rock & heavy metal music bands and performances and then compared them to their Christian counterparts, I did see differences but not many! The stage performance was very similar with the exception of Non-Christian heavy metal revealing more of a dark or sadistic side at times in general there was little if no difference in presentation from Christian rock to standard or Non-Christian music. The only real difference I could see was in the lyrical content, with Christian rock music singing words from the Bible and preaching family values.

So why was Christian rock music introverted for so many years, seemingly hiding in the shadows from more upright members of the Christian community? Well apparently they weren’t hiding at all, it’s just that I like many people didn’t even know they were around back then! Good old fashioned Christian rock bands like Petra, Stryper, Bloodgood, Whitecross and Tourniquet have been rocking Christians and secular music lovers alike for generations.

The voice of rock damnation is still screaming louder than ever in some Christian circles although seemingly falling on deaf ears of a Christian Rocker community that grows bigger every day. Who opposes this Christian liberation? Who else but other Christians! It seems some segments of who have not advanced to modern day sounds are Bible bashing these Christian rock music head bangers with eternal consequences for their “misguidance”. The most dramatic example I came across was the seventh day adventist (SDA) church who proclaim that Christian rock music is quote “Devil music”. The seventh day adventist church preach that all rock music has the “beat of the devil” borrowed from primate heathen rituals, beating in time with the body’s “natural rhythms”. I found it hard to believe that people could think this way at first, but indeed it is true and the SDA church is serious about stamping out any and all rock music, or anything for that matter that has a drum beat!
